Happy Holidays from NCMB, and remember to celebrate responsibly

Image for Happy Holidays from NCMB, and remember to celebrate responsibly The holiday season is a special time of year, with many opportunities to celebrate with family, friends, and loved ones. During this festive time, there can be much temptation to overindulge in alcohol at parties and other events. NCMB typically notes an increase in reports of licensee arrests for drinking and driving from Thanksgiving until the New Year. The final 2024 episode of NCMB's podcast, MedBoard Matters, highlights takes a closer look at this phenomenon.

Driving while under the influence of alcohol or other substances puts yourself and others on the road in great danger. What’s more, drinking and driving can have significant negative consequences to your employment and could potentially result in regulatory action.

While ideally the holidays should be a joyful time, the season can also bring many challenges for people who are experiencing stress, burnout, loss, and/or depression. In some cases, people may choose to self-medicate with alcohol or other substances.

NCMB values the health and well-being of all of its licensees. The Board encourages licensees who are experiencing mental health issues or struggling with alcohol or substance use to seek help and support if they need it. The NC Professionals Health Program (NCPHP) offers free initial consultations to all NC licensees. Reach NCPHP 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 919-870-4480 to schedule a confidential meeting with one of their highly qualified counselors.

From all of us at NCMB, have a restful and joyful holiday.
