NCMB returned to Campbell University on Feb. 12 to lead first year PA students through a mock disciplinary committee experience designed to immerse learners in medical regulatory work. The Board first presented this material to first year medical students at Campbell's School of Osteopathic Medicine in November 2019. Immediate Past President Barbara Walker, DO, presented the course to both groups of students. Students discussed maintaining appropriate boundaries, prescribing to self and immediate family members, addressing burnout and substance use and other issues that regularly bring licensees to the Board’s attention.
The visits to Campbell are part of a pilot program that aims to help young professional avoid missteps by familiarizing them with the ethical and professional issues that come before the Board on a regular basis. NCMB plans to refine and improve the program based on feedback from Campbell students and administrators and seek opportunities to present the course to other medical and PA schools and residency programs in the state.
