Medical Board installs officers for 2010-2011

The NC Medical Board has seated its Board officers for the coming year. Janice E. Huff, MD, of Charlotte, will serve as president; Ralph C. Loomis, MD, of Asheville, will serve as president-elect; and William A. Walker, MD, of Charlotte, will serve as secretary/treasurer. Their terms run from November 1 to October 31, 2011.

David Henderson, executive director of the Board, said. “Each year we benefit from the ideas and perspective of a new leadership team. We can address changes and develop new initiatives that continue to partner patient safety with professional excellence.”

In 2009-2010, under the direction of Donald E. Jablonski, DO, the Board focused on collaborating with health care providers to streamline the Board’s licensure process, develop standards for advertising specialty board certification to the public, and establish guidelines for maintaining professional competence in the context of practice drift. Dr. Jablonski will continue to serve as an officer of the Board in 2010-2011 as immediate past president


JANICE E. HUFF, MD, PRESIDENT
Janice E. Huff, MD, of Charlotte, graduated with honors from Michigan State University, completing a BS degree in physiology. She earned her medical degree from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, where she was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. She completed internship and residency in the Department of Family Medicine at Carolinas Healthcare System, formerly Charlotte Memorial Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Huff is a part-time faculty member of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and is a clinical instructor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also practices part-time at Presbyterian Urgent Care and Mecklenburg Health Care Center in Charlotte.

Dr. Huff is a member of the North Carolina Medical Society and serves on the organization’s Managed Care and Access to Health Care Committees. She is also a member of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, where she currently serves on the Board of Directors. She also serves as a director on the Presbyterian Hospice and Palliative Care Advisory Board. Dr. Huff is a fellow and member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. She is a member of numerous professional groups and societies, including the North Carolina Academy of Family Physicians, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, the American Medical Association, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Family Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Huff was appointed to the NCMB in 2007. She chairs the Executive Committee and serves on the Physicians Health Program Committee.


RALPH C. LOOMIS, MD, PRESIDENT-ELECT
A native of Kentucky, Dr. Loomis took his undergraduate degree, cum laude, at Vanderbilt University, and his MD degree from Indiana University, where he received the Senior Honors Program Award. He did his internship at Indiana and remained at the same institution for his residency in neurosurgery, during which he received the Willis Gatch General Surgery Award. He also took the Theodore Gildred Microsurgical Course and was coauthor of an article in the Annals of Surgery.

Dr. Loomis is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgery and the American Association of Neurological Surgery and is an officer in the North Carolina Neurosurgical Society, as well as the North Carolina delegate to the National Council of State Neurosurgical Societies. Dr. Loomis represents the neurosurgery section of Mission Hospitals in the level II trauma section of the western region of North Carolina and is past chief of surgery for Mission Hospitals. He practices at the Carolina Spine and Neurosurgery Center in Asheville, NC.

Appointed to the Board in 2005, Dr. Loomis completed a three-year term in 2008. He was reappointed to a second three-year term in 2009. Dr. Loomis was appointed to the Bylaws Committee of the Federation of State Medical Boards to serve from 2007-2010. He currently chairs the NCMB’s Policy Committee and serves on the Executive and Physicians Health Program Committees.


WILLIAM A. WALKER, MD, SECRETARY/TREASURER
William A. Walker, MD, of Charlotte, earned his BA in chemistry and psychology and his MD from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He completed his internship and residency training in general surgery and a fellowship in gastrointestinal physiology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He also completed a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

A native of Goldsboro, Dr Walker currently practices at Charlotte Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates and is a community faculty member in the Department of Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Throughout his career, he served in a number of administrative and professional positions, including chairman of the Endoscopy Committee at Presbyterian Hospital, board member of the Mecklenburg County Chapters of the American Cancer Society and American Lung Association, and president of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. He currently serves on the North Carolina Physician Advisory Group for North Carolina Medicaid and the Surgical Specialties Quality Improvement Committee at Mercy Hospital. He is past chief of staff at Presbyterian Hospital and president of Charlotte Colon and Rectal Surgery Associates.

Dr. Walker is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He is an active member of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society, the North Carolina Medical Society, and the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract. He is the recipient of the President’s Award of the Mecklenburg County Medical Society. He has coauthored numerous publications and given presentations across the United States.
